Thai Kinship Terms: Family Words You Use as You

Thai often uses family words as you. Older sibling, auntie, uncle, mum, grandma. Age is the whole joke. Get it wrong and someone will feel it.

Illustrated guide to Thai kinship terms: a family with speech bubbles for yâa, phêe, náa, lung, phǒm, nǔu, and mâe

Thai does not always say you. A lot of the time it says older sibling. Or auntie. Or mum.

That is kinship as address. You are not claiming a blood test. You are placing two people on a ladder and then talking like that is normal. Because in Thai, it is.

The ladder is age. Get the rung wrong and someone will feel it. Call an older sister auntie and you just aged her. Call an auntie older sibling and she might blush like you asked her out. khun is still the polite you if you do not want to play. Family words are what happens when the room is already playing.

This is the map. The daily pair, the auntie uncle layer, mum and grandma, then the two words that sound family and are not.

Day-one starter kit

  • Safe you: คุณ khun
  • Same generation: พี่ / น้อง phêe / nóng
  • Older generation: ป้า / ลุง bpâa / lung

When you cannot see the age, copy the room or stay on khun. Guessing is how tourists write comedy.

Why Thai says older sibling instead of you

English keeps you boring on purpose. One word, every age, every vibe. Thai would rather tell you where you sit.

If they are older in your generation, they are phêe. If they are younger, they are nóng. If they are old enough to be your parent’s sibling, you jump a generation and land on bpâa or lung. Vendors do this. Staff do this. Friends do this after one drink. Nobody is updating a family tree. They are just refusing to talk like strangers if they do not have to.

That is why this page is not a genealogy chart. It is a you chart that happens to use family nouns. The noun is doing relationship work so the rest of the sentence can stay short. phêe, eaten yet? is a whole social file in four syllables.

If you want the regular pronoun set first, I, you, he, she, we, they, start with Thai pronouns. Come back here when the room starts calling people phêe.

The words you will actually hear

Nine tiles. Seven are real family-as-you. Two are jokes wearing family clothes. Scan the grid, then we unpack the ones that will actually come out of your mouth.

น้อง

nóng

younger sibling

Them younger. You just became the older one.

พี่

phêe

older sibling

Them older. Soft, daily, everywhere.

ป้า

bpâa

auntie

Older woman, next generation. Markets love this.

ลุง

lung

uncle

Older man, same jump as auntie.

พ่อ

phôr

dad

Mostly family. Not a flirty you.

แม่

mâe

mum

Family first. Close rooms play with it.

ยาย

yaai

grandma

Warm, older woman. Grandpa sits nearby.

ป๋า

bpǎa

sugar daddy

Not dad. One tone mark away from auntie.

ตัวแม่

dtua mâe

serving mommy energy

Yaas queen. Not packing anyone’s lunch.

Orange tiles are the slang shelf. Learn them so you do not hear family and nod along.

The daily pair: phêe and nóng

phêe and nóng are the workhorses. Same generation. Age is the only question. You will hear them in shops, group chats, and any room that decided strangers are exhausting.

พี่

phêe

oldersame generation

They are older. You are not picking a fight about it. Staff, classmates, the person who clearly has their life together more than you. Soft default. You can also hear phêe plus a nickname, which is still you, just with a bow on it.

น้อง

nóng

youngersame generation

They are younger. You just accepted the older-sibling job. Cute when it is true. Weird if they have grey hair and you do not. If you cannot see the age, do not coin-flip. khun will not start a story about you.

The sentence can stay tiny. Thai already parked the relationship in the first word, so the rest is just the errand. Hit listen and steal the melody.

Ask the older one where they are going

พี่ไปไหน

phêe bpai nǎi

Where are you going? (to someone older in your generation)

Check if the younger one has eaten

น้องกินข้าวหรือยัง

nóng gin khâao rǔe yang

Have you eaten yet? (to someone younger. Also, secretly, “I am looking after you.”)

If both of you could be phêe, the room usually picks by vibe, job, or who started it. Do not hold a tribunal. Copy whoever spoke first, or stay on khun until someone hands you a rung.

Auntie, uncle, mum, grandma

Now you leave your generation. The words get warmer and the stakes get weirder, because warmth and age live in the same syllable.

ป้า

bpâa

auntienext generation

Older woman, one generation up. Market stall, neighbour, the auntie who already decided you are skinny. Respect. Also a clock. This is the word that starts incidents if you aim it at an older sister.

ลุง

lung

unclenext generation

Older man, same jump. Taxi, shop, someone’s actual uncle. Usually lands cleaner than auntie, because men complain less about the number. Still a generation call. Do not use it on a guy who is clearly your older brother.

Offer the auntie this one

ป้าเอาอันนี้ไหม

bpâa ao an née mǎi

Do you want this one, auntie? (stall energy. Warm. Correct generation.)

Get the uncle’s attention

ลุงครับ

lung khráp

Uncle? (polite hello from a guy. Swap in khâ if that is your particle.)

พ่อ

phôr

dadmostly family

In real families it is dad. As a flirty you it is the wrong tool. Leave it at home unless you are actually talking to your father, or the room is doing a very specific bit you already understand.

แม่

mâe

mumclose rooms play

Same rule as dad, plus a little more play with friends. People will mâe each other when the vibe is soft and a bit chaotic. You still do not open with it at immigration.

yaai is grandma, the warm older-woman word you will hear for women who have left the auntie bracket. Grandpa sits on a nearby shelf, bpùu or dtaa, depending on which side of the family people mean. You will survive a week in Thailand without becoming a grandpa specialist.

The sister or auntie trap

This is the whole joke, and it is not a small one.

Thai kinship you is a compliment machine that can also be a roast. phêe says we are peers, you are just older. bpâa says I put you in my parents’ generation. Both can be affectionate. Only one of them keeps her in her twenties.

You see Safer you What the other one does
Woman who could be your older sister พี่ phêe ป้า ages her. She will feel it.
Woman who is clearly the next generation ป้า bpâa พี่ can sound like a crush. She might blush.
You cannot tell. At all. คุณ khun Guessing is how tourists write comedy.

Do not do this to an older sister

ป้าสวยจัง

bpâa sǔai jang

Auntie, you look so pretty. (she heard the age, not the compliment)

Do not do this to a real auntie unless the room is already there

พี่ไปไหน

phêe bpai nǎi

Where are you going, older sister? (she heard the flirt)

Copy the room. If everyone is phêe, you are phêe. If the vendor is already bpâa, you are bpâa. If nobody has picked, khun is not cowardice. It is manners.

Auntie vs sugar daddy: bpâa and bpǎa

This pair is a one-tone-mark trap. Same consonant shape. Different tone mark. Completely different life.

phôr is dad. bpǎa is the man with the card out. If you mix them you have either insulted a father or invented a plot. If you mix bpâa and bpǎa, you have either aged a woman or hired a sugar daddy at the fruit stall.

Word Who it is Who it is not
ป้า bpâa Auntie. Market. Neighbour. Respect. A date who pays for dinner.
ป๋า bpǎa Sugar daddy. The joke. The warning. Your father. That is พ่อ phôr.

The version you want at the stall

ป้าเอาอันนี้ไหม

bpâa ao an née mǎi

Do you want this one, auntie? (tone mark: falling. Family. Fine.)

The version that is a different movie

ป๋าจ่ายให้

bpǎa jàai hâi

Sugar daddy will get this. (tone mark: rising. Do not debut this at lunch with someone’s actual dad.)

dtua mâe is not packing lunch

dtua mâe looks like mum because mâe is sitting right there. It is not mum. It is serving mommy energy. Yaas queen. The person who walked in and the room changed temperature.

You say it about someone who is doing the most, in a good way. You do not say it to your actual mother unless your family is already that family.

ตัวแม่

dtua mâe

slangnot your mum

Mommy energy as a compliment. The look, the walk, the “I understood the assignment” face. If you came here for lunchboxes, you are in the wrong aisle.

When she ate

เธอเป็นตัวแม่เลย

ther bpen dtua mâe loei

She is serving mommy energy. (full send. Not packing anyone’s lunch.)

None of this makes you cousins.

Kinship you is a social tool. It can be sweet. It can be sales. It can be a joke. The noun is doing relationship work so the sentence does not have to. That is why it feels intimate even when you just met. The language already picked a sofa.

Play only matches the room. A 7-Eleven at 7am is not a family reunion. A friend of a friend who already called you nóng is an invitation. khun is the door you can always walk back through.

If you remember nothing else: age is the joke, the room is the referee, and khun will not start a family incident.

Thai kinship cheat sheet

If this were a fridge magnet:

Job Word Note
Polite you, no ladder คุณ khun When you cannot see the age
Older, same generation พี่ phêe Daily. Soft. Everywhere.
Younger, same generation น้อง nóng You accepted the older job
Older woman, next generation ป้า bpâa Not for an older sister
Older man, next generation ลุง lung Uncle. Usually safer than auntie
Actual dad พ่อ phôr Family. Not a flirty you
Mum, or close-room play แม่ mâe Do not open with this
Warm older woman ยาย yaai Grandma energy
Sugar daddy ป๋า bpǎa Not พ่อ. Not auntie.
Serving mommy energy ตัวแม่ dtua mâe Yaas. Not lunch.

You do not need all of these on day one. You need khun, then phêe and nóng, then the guts to not call an older sister bpâa. The rest is seasoning you add when the soup already tastes like something.
