Thai Pronouns: How to Say I, You, He, She, We, and They

Thai pronouns do not work like English ones. English gave you one I and called it a day. Thai looked at that, laughed politely, and built a whole wardrobe. Same person. Same Tuesday. Four different ways to say “me,” depending on whether you are being a gentleman, a normal human, extra polite, or a raccoon who just found the night-market Wi-Fi password.

This is a practical map of I, you, he, she, we, and they in Thai. Scan it. Tap the audio. Steal the examples.

Thai pronouns are a vibe check

Thai pronouns are social, not just grammatical. You pick them the way you pick a shirt: who are you, who are they, how close are you, and how much trouble do you want.

If you remember nothing else:

Start polite.
Match the room.
Thai is flexible. Locals will still understand you if you pick a slightly weird option. They will just file you under “cute foreigner who tried.”

And the secret bonus rule: Thai often drops the pronoun if it is already obvious. Someone can just say “hungry already” and the room knows who. You. The mango. The universe. Context does a lot of unpaid intern work in this language.

Day-one starter kit

Four ways to say I, out loud

Same hunger. Four personalities. Hit listen and steal the melody. Thai is much easier once your ears have a copy.

Same sentence. Same stomach. Different I.

I dunno, man. (friends only. If you would not share fries with them, do not use gǔ.)

Quick cheat: the usual defaults are phǒm for guys, chán for women, dichán for fancy rooms, gǔ for friends-only chaos. Usual. Not required.

You do not have to match the gender on the tin. Thai will let you pick the one that sounds like you. Femme boy, twink, a little bit sparkly: chán can sit right. A bit of a butch woman: phǒm can sit right. Or you are with a bunch of boys and you grab phǒm as a joke so you blend in for five minutes. People get it. It is a vibe, not a passport stamp.

Using your name instead of I

Some people skip the pronoun and just use their name. Especially women. Mew hungry already. Ploy don’t know. No chán. No dichán. Just the name, standing there like a signature.

It can sound warm and close, like you have been friends since before anyone owned a real sofa. It can also sound like she thinks she is a walking sticker pack. That “wow, she thinks she is so cutesy” energy. Not everyone can pull it off. If it sounds cute in your head and a bit much out loud, trust the second one.

Guys do it too. Less often, same gamble. If you would not say it in a group chat with people who have seen you eat, maybe stick with phǒm.

Mew is hungry already. (name as I. Cute if it is her real register. Costume if it is not.)

Other Thai pronouns: nǔu the mouse, and the formal ones

The main map is enough to order noodles. The language still has a few extra hangers in the closet. One of them you will actually hear. The rest live on plaques.

Yes, the animal. Used as I when you are younger, or talking to someone older, and you want to make yourself small on purpose. Kids. Plenty of women with teachers, bosses, parents. Soft, humble, a bit cute. Also used as you toward a little kid. A grown tourist debuting this at a bar will sound like they brought a costume.

I’m hungry already. (mouse I. Fine from a younger speaker to an older one. Weird from a 40-year-old at the night market.)

Then the museum shelf. You will meet these in textbooks, news, and very shiny rooms. You do not need them to buy fruit.

dichán already covers “I put on nice shoes.” khun already covers polite you. These three are what happens when someone opens the protocol binder. Recognize them. Nod. Go back to phǒm and chán.

You in Thai: khun and ther

English you is a blunt instrument. Thai you is a dimmer switch. You can be respectful, soft, close, or “we have seen each other eat mango sticky rice with our hands.” The two you actually need first are khun and ther.

If your brain is full, park it here: khun = polite you. ther = close you (and sometimes she).

Thai also lets you use family words as you. Older sibling, auntie, uncle, the whole social shelf. You are not saying they are actually your relatives. You are parking someone by age. That is a whole sport, so it gets its own guide.

When you are guessing, khun will not start a family incident.

He and she in Thai: khǎo does both

English panics without he and she. Thai shrugs, orders another iced coffee, and keeps talking.

The big one is เขา (khǎo). It can mean he, she, or even they, depending on the sentence. Thai does not always need to announce gender like a sports commentator. The rest of the sentence, or the fact that you already know who you are gossiping about, does the job.

Then there is เธอ (ther) again. Talking to someone, it is you. Talking about someone, it can be she. If that feels like a plot twist, welcome to Thai. The language would rather be natural than fill in a spreadsheet.

When it is she, you are usually talking about a woman you can picture. When it is you, you are in the chat. Listen to the rest of the sentence. It will snitch.

He / she is a doctor. (Thai did not tell you which. You already knew, or you will ask.)

This is the bit that makes English speakers itch. Let it itch. Then let it go. Nobody in the noodle shop is waiting for you to declare a pronoun paradigm. They just want to know if khǎo is coming to dinner.

We and they in Thai: rao the shapeshifter

Here is where Thai gets playful. Bring a snack.

เรา (rao) is famous for meaning we. It also, casually, means I. Same word. Different size of group. Sometimes the group is just you, standing there, narrating your own life like a documentary. “Anyway, rao went to 7-Eleven…” is a perfectly normal I.

When you want to be extra clear that it is a team, you can say พวกเรา (phûak rao). Phûak is like sticking a little “the bunch of” in front. Bunch-of-us. We. Useful when rao alone might sound like you are talking about yourself in the royal we, which you are not, unless you are, in which case we need a different article.

For they, the clear version is พวกเขา (phûak khǎo). Bunch-of-them. They.

And then Thai, being Thai, also lets you just say khǎo for they, if the “them” is already obvious. Flexible. Slightly chaotic. Extremely usable. This is not Thai forgetting the rules. This is Thai trusting you to keep up.

You want Say Vibe

we (clearer) พวกเรา phûak rao The whole crew. Not just you.

they พวกเขา phûak khǎo The other team. Unambiguous.

they (short) เขา khǎo If everyone already knows who “they” is.

Shall we go? (classic we, you plus at least one other doomed tourist)

So, on one sticky note: rao can be I or we. phûak rao is we-for-sure. phûak khǎo is they-for-sure. khǎo can still be he, she, or they if the room already knows. If that feels like too many jobs for a few short words, congratulations. You have understood Thai pronouns.

Thai pronoun cheat sheet

If this were a fridge magnet:

I: phǒm (usual guy default), chán (usual everyday), dichán (formal feminine), gǔ (friends-only chaos). nǔu is the mouse I for younger speakers talking up. Gender is a starting point, not a lock. Femme guys use chán. Butch women use phǒm. Sometimes it is a joke with the boys. Some people use their name instead. Cute when it is real. Cutesy when it is a performance. gràphǒm and khâa phá jáao exist for speeches and forms. You can leave them in the museum.
You: khun (polite), ther (close, and sometimes she). thâan is the extra-polite you at hotels. Family words as you get their own guide.
He / she: khǎo does both. Ther can be she.
We: rao, or phûak rao if you want the whole gang.
They: phûak khǎo, or just khǎo when it is obvious.

You do not need all of these on day one. You need one I, one you, and khǎo. The rest is seasoning you add when the soup already tastes like something.

Thai pronouns look like a maze from the outside. From the inside they are more like a night market: lots of stalls, same street, you walk through and pick what fits. Nobody is timing you with a stopwatch. If you say phǒm when rao would have been cooler, you still get the noodles.

Practice the audio a couple of times. Say the sentences out loud like you mean them: hungry, sorry, “shall we go,” the whole sitcom. Then go eat. The pronouns will still be there after mango sticky rice. They always are.

Thai Past Tense: Yesterday, Already, Yet, and Ever

Thai does not have a past tense on the verb. English changes eat to ate. Thai keeps กิน. The verb stays still. You add a time word or a small particle and the sentence is already in the past.

This page is the set you actually need: yesterday I…, I already…, have you… yet / I haven’t yet, have you ever / I have never, and I was… when….

Thai has no past tense on the verb

กิน is eat, ate, and will eat until you add something else. Context does a lot of work. If you already said เมื่อวาน, you do not also need a special verb ending. There is not one.

So “yesterday I went to the market” is not a new verb. It is เมื่อวาน plus ไปตลาด. Same ไป you use for tomorrow.

The markers below are not tenses. They are jobs: a clock, a “done” stamp, a “yet” check, an “ever in your life” check, and a “while this was happening” frame.

เมื่อวาน (mûea waan): yesterday I …

Put the time at the front. Then the usual sentence. Subject is optional if it is obvious.

Pattern: เมื่อวาน + (I) + verb.

เมื่อวานผมไปตลาด. Yesterday I went to the market. เมื่อวานฝนตก. It rained yesterday. No extra glue.

The family is the same shape. เมื่อกี้ mûea gîi is just now / a moment ago. เมื่อเช้า mûea cháo is this morning (already gone). เมื่อคืน mûea keun is last night. ปีที่แล้ว bpii thîi láew is last year. Same slot. Same unchanged verb.

Yesterday + verb

เมื่อวานผมไปตลาด

mûea waan phǒm bpai dtàlàat

Yesterday I went to the market.

No subject needed

เมื่อวานฝนตก

mûea waan fǒn dtòk

It rained yesterday.

Do not put แล้ว on every yesterday sentence. เมื่อวานผมไปตลาด is already past. แล้ว is a different job.

แล้ว (láew): I already …

แล้ว sits after the verb (or after the whole verb phrase). It means the action is done, or the state has flipped.

Pattern: (I) + verb + แล้ว.

ผมกินข้าวแล้ว. I already ate. กินแล้ว. Ate already. เสร็จแล้ว. Finished already.

That last one is a collocation: เสร็จแล้ว sèt láew is “already finished,” the answer you give when someone is chasing a chore. ไว้แล้ว wái láew is “already done in advance,” like a booking: จองไว้แล้ว.

แล้ว is also “and then” and a soft “so.” ไปตลาดแล้วซื้อผลไม้ is “went to the market and then bought fruit.” If the sentence is a sequence, แล้ว is the hinge, not a past-tense stamp. Listen for that.

Done. Full stop.

Already finished.

เขาแต่งงานแล้ว is often “he is married,” a state, not “he got married five minutes ago.” Same particle. Different English.

เพิ่ง (phêng): I just …

เพิ่ง goes before the verb. Recent. You just did it.

Pattern: (I) + เพิ่ง + verb.

ฉันเพิ่งถึง. I just arrived. ผมเพิ่งกิน. I just ate. Closer than เมื่อวาน. Closer than a vague แล้ว.

You can stack a time word if you need it: เมื่อกี้ผมเพิ่งถึง. A moment ago I just arrived. That is allowed. It is also a lot of clock. Usually เพิ่งถึง is enough.

Just now

ฉันเพิ่งถึงค่ะ

I just arrived.

หรือยัง (rǔe yang): have you … yet?

Say the action as normal. Tag หรือยัง on the end. That is the question.

Pattern: verb (+ object) + หรือยัง.

กินข้าวหรือยัง. Have you eaten yet? จองตั๋วหรือยัง. Have you booked the tickets yet? กวาดบ้านหรือยัง. Have you swept yet?

Short answers: แล้ว or เสร็จแล้ว if it is done. ยัง if it is not. You do not need a full sentence. Thai is happy with the particle.

กินข้าวหรือยัง is also small talk. People ask it the way English asks “how are you.” Answer the food question or treat it as a hello. Both work.

ไหม mái can ask a yes/no past thing too: กินแล้วไหม. Have you eaten already? หรือยัง is the “yet” version. Use หรือยัง when the job might still be outstanding.

The yet-question

ยังไม่ได้ (yang mâi dâi): I haven’t … yet

ยัง on its own is the short “not yet.” For a full sentence, Thai usually adds ได้ in front of the verb.

Pattern: (I) + ยังไม่ได้ + verb.

ยังไม่ได้กิน. I haven’t eaten yet. ผมยังไม่ได้ทำการบ้าน. I haven’t done my homework yet. ฉันยังไม่ได้จองตั๋ว. I haven’t booked the tickets yet.

ยังไม่ without ได้ sits in front of an adjective or a “done” word: ยังไม่เสร็จ (not finished yet), ยังไม่สะอาด (not clean yet). Action you have not got round to: ยังไม่ได้ + verb.

The not-yet answer

ยังไม่ได้กินค่ะ

I haven’t eaten yet.

Do not mix this with ไม่เคย. ยังไม่ได้กิน is “not yet, but maybe later today.” ไม่เคยกิน is “I have never eaten that, period.”

เคย (khoei): have you ever …

เคย is experience. Have you ever. Used to. At least once in your life. It is not “yesterday.”

Pattern: (you) + เคย + verb + ไหม.

คุณเคยไปเชียงใหม่ไหม. Have you ever been to Chiang Mai? คุณเคยกินทุเรียนไหม. Have you ever eaten durian?

เคย goes before the verb. ไหม on the end makes it a question. Answer เคย if yes. You can add แล้ว: เคยแล้ว. Been there.

The ever-question

คุณเคยไปเชียงใหม่ไหม

Have you ever been to Chiang Mai?

If you mean yesterday, use เมื่อวาน. เคยไปเมื่อวาน is not how you say “I went yesterday.” เคย is the wrong shelf.

ไม่เคย (mâi khoei): I have never …

Same slot. Negative.

Pattern: (I) + ไม่เคย + verb.

ผมไม่เคยไป. I have never been. ฉันไม่เคยกินทุเรียน. I have never eaten durian. ไม่เคยเลย if you want to lean on it.

กำลัง … อยู่ and ตอนที่: I was … when …

English “I was eating when he called” is two pieces in Thai.

กำลัง gamlang + verb + อยู่ yòo is the “in the middle of” frame. It is also how you say you are doing something right now. The past comes from ตอนที่ or from a time word.

ตอนที่ dtorn thîi is “at the time that / when.”

Pattern: กำลัง + verb + อยู่ + ตอนที่ + [the other thing].

ผมกำลังกินข้าวอยู่ตอนที่เขาโทรมา. I was eating when he called.

You can flip the clauses: ตอนที่เขาโทรมา ผมกำลังกินข้าวอยู่. Same meaning. Put the “when” bit first if you want the interruption to land first.

ตอนนั้น dtorn nán is “at that time.” เมื่อวานตอนที่ฝนตก ผมอยู่บ้าน. Yesterday when it was raining I was at home. You do not need กำลัง if you are just locating yourself. You need กำลัง…อยู่ when the action was in progress.

Do not translate was as เป็น. ผมเป็นกินข้าว is not a sentence.

In progress, then interrupted

ผมกำลังกินข้าวอยู่ตอนที่เขาโทรมา

I was eating when he called.

Extra time words that do the same job

These sit in the เมื่อวาน slot. Verb still does not change.

English Thai Where it sits

Just now เมื่อกี้ mûea gîi Front of the sentence. Pair with เพิ่ง if you want.

This morning (gone) เมื่อเช้า mûea cháo Same slot as yesterday.

Last night เมื่อคืน mûea keun Same slot.

Last year ปีที่แล้ว bpii thîi láew ที่แล้ว is “the one that already passed.”

At that time ตอนนั้น dtorn nán A point you already named.

ได้ dâi before a verb can mark that something really happened, often in writing or when you are being a bit official: ผมได้ไปแล้ว. You will hear it. You do not need it for “yesterday I went to the market.” Start with เมื่อวาน and แล้ว.

จะ ja is the future marker. Leave it off the past sentences. เมื่อวานผมจะไปตลาด is “yesterday I was going to go,” a plan, not a trip you took.

What not to do

Do not conjugate the Thai verb. There is no -ed.

Do not stamp แล้ว on every past sentence. Yesterday already did the job.

Do not use เคย for a thing that happened yesterday. เคย is ever / used to.

Do not use ไม่เคย when you mean ยังไม่ได้. Never and not-yet are different shelves.

Do not translate I was as ผมเป็น + verb.

Start with เมื่อวาน, verb + แล้ว, หรือยัง / ยังไม่ได้, and เคย / ไม่เคย. Add กำลัง…อยู่ ตอนที่ when you need two things happening at once. That is enough past tense for a long time.

Thai Kinship Terms: Family Words You Use as You

Thai does not always say you. A lot of the time it says older sibling. Or auntie. Or mum.

That is kinship as address. You are not claiming a blood test. You are placing two people on a ladder and then talking like that is normal. Because in Thai, it is.

The ladder is age. Get the rung wrong and someone will feel it. Call an older sister auntie and you just aged her. Call an auntie older sibling and she might blush like you asked her out. khun is still the polite you if you do not want to play. Family words are what happens when the room is already playing.

This is the map. The daily pair, the auntie uncle layer, mum and grandma, then the two words that sound family and are not.

When you cannot see the age, copy the room or stay on khun. Guessing is how tourists write comedy.

Why Thai says older sibling instead of you

English keeps you boring on purpose. One word, every age, every vibe. Thai would rather tell you where you sit.

If they are older in your generation, they are phêe. If they are younger, they are nóng. If they are old enough to be your parent’s sibling, you jump a generation and land on bpâa or lung. Vendors do this. Staff do this. Friends do this after one drink. Nobody is updating a family tree. They are just refusing to talk like strangers if they do not have to.

That is why this page is not a genealogy chart. It is a you chart that happens to use family nouns. The noun is doing relationship work so the rest of the sentence can stay short. phêe, eaten yet? is a whole social file in four syllables.

The daily pair: phêe and nóng

phêe and nóng are the workhorses. Same generation. Age is the only question. You will hear them in shops, group chats, and any room that decided strangers are exhausting.

They are older. You are not picking a fight about it. Staff, classmates, the person who clearly has their life together more than you. Soft default. You can also hear phêe plus a nickname, which is still you, just with a bow on it.

They are younger. You just accepted the older-sibling job. Cute when it is true. Weird if they have grey hair and you do not. If you cannot see the age, do not coin-flip. khun will not start a story about you.

The sentence can stay tiny. Thai already parked the relationship in the first word, so the rest is just the errand. Hit listen and steal the melody.

Ask the older one where they are going

Check if the younger one has eaten

Have you eaten yet? (to someone younger. Also, secretly, “I am looking after you.”)

If both of you could be phêe, the room usually picks by vibe, job, or who started it. Do not hold a tribunal. Copy whoever spoke first, or stay on khun until someone hands you a rung.

Auntie, uncle, mum, grandma

Now you leave your generation. The words get warmer and the stakes get weirder, because warmth and age live in the same syllable.

This is the whole joke, and it is not a small one.

Thai kinship you is a compliment machine that can also be a roast. phêe says we are peers, you are just older. bpâa says I put you in my parents’ generation. Both can be affectionate. Only one of them keeps her in her twenties.

Copy the room. If everyone is phêe, you are phêe. If the vendor is already bpâa, you are bpâa. If nobody has picked, khun is not cowardice. It is manners.

This pair is a one-tone-mark trap. Same consonant shape. Different tone mark. Completely different life.

phôr is dad. bpǎa is the man with the card out. If you mix them you have either insulted a father or invented a plot. If you mix bpâa and bpǎa, you have either aged a woman or hired a sugar daddy at the fruit stall.

Kinship you is a social tool. It can be sweet. It can be sales. It can be a joke. The noun is doing relationship work so the sentence does not have to. That is why it feels intimate even when you just met. The language already picked a sofa.

Play only matches the room. A 7-Eleven at 7am is not a family reunion. A friend of a friend who already called you nóng is an invitation. khun is the door you can always walk back through.

If you remember nothing else: age is the joke, the room is the referee, and khun will not start a family incident.

Thai LGBT Slang: Gay Talk, Kathoey Words, and What They Mean

Thai LGBT slang is not a secret sex dictionary. It is how gay, kathoey, and other LGBTQ people in Thailand talk when the room is already loud: camp compliments, roasts, mood reports. ศัพท์เทย, kathoey slang, is the engine. A lot of it leaked into everyone else’s group chat.

The trick is usually the same. Start with a real Thai meaning. Châm is juicy, like fruit, like skin after skincare. Then the room uses it for a face, a paycheck, a whole personality: extra, glossy, too much in a good way. Bùut is spoiled food. Then it is a spoiled vibe. Once you see the pattern, gay slang in Thai stops looking random.

Teenagers, beauty YouTube, and your auntie’s Facebook stole half of this. That is how you know it worked. This page is LGBT slang in Thai you will actually hear, what the words meant first, and when they fit.

Day-one starter kit

How Thai LGBT compliments actually work

These are not random noises. Most of them have a straight job in Thai, then a camp job in gay and kathoey talk.

เริ่ด (rêet)

Chopped-down เลิศ, “excellent.” Now it means fabulous. A look, a bowl of noodles, a comeback. Stretch it, rêeeet, when you mean it. Use it flat and tired when the day was a disaster and you are being funny on purpose. The veteran. People who do not think of themselves as speaking kathoey still say it.

ฉ่ำ (châm)

Straight job: moist, juicy, dewy. Fruit. Skin after skincare. Camp job: full send. Extra, glossy, too much in a good way. It wants a noun. Lǒr châm is handsome in high definition. Rúay châm is rich, dripping. On its own, châm mâak is “that was a lot, in a good way.” If you only steal one collocation, steal lǒr châm.

ปัง (bpang)

English bang, written in Thai. A song charts, a look walks in, a joke lands. The room popped. If châm is the juice, bpang is the explosion.

ตัวแม่ (dtua mâe)

The mum. The one who ate. Best in the room at this, not your actual mother. She ran the look, the argument, the group chat. English “yaas queen” is close. Thai also says ตัวมัม dtua máam when it wants a bigger wig. คุณน้า khun náa is what you call her to her face when you are impressed and a little afraid: “You did that, auntie.”

The roast side uses the same trick. Food words, death words. Then they describe a feeling.

ตุย (dtuy)

Cute stand-in for ตาย, die. Not a eulogy. A body report. Wiped. Empty tank. “I’m dead” as in tired. The one you will hear at 2am. Work finished her. The queue finished her.

Spoiled, as in curry left out. Then the vibe went off. Salty. Not cute. Bùut is the room, not the performance. If the night turned, this is the smell.

She said nine. She meant whenever the makeup agreed. You still book a table. You just do not book it at nine.

Kathoey, sao song, and ladyboy: LGBT words tourists get wrong

Slang is how LGBTQ rooms talk. These are the nouns for who is in the room. English tourists say ladyboy. Thai is pickier.

สาวสอง (sǎao sǒng)

Short for สาวประเภทสอง, “second kind of woman.” The politer category when you need one. Many people in that category just say phûu yǐng. Woman. Because they are.

กะเทย (gà-thoei)

The old umbrella: trans women, feminine gay men, people English keeps filing into the wrong folder. Some wear it. Some flinch. Do not open with it at a stranger. Do not call a woman this because a blog taught you the word.

เกย์ (gay)

Thai borrowed it and kept it. Fine in most rooms. The slang above is the costume. This is just the noun.

ตุ๊ด (dtút)

Often a slur. In-group, maybe. Out of a learner’s mouth, no. Not a souvenir. Leave it.

The cover is cabaret. That is work: lights, payroll, choreography. Thai queer life is also offices, markets, and Line chats. If she uses khâ, it may be because she is a woman, not because she is a bit. ทอม tom and ดี้ dee are the butch and femme lesbian lanes. Same country. The slang still leaks in.

khráp when you like him, khâ when he is your sister

Slang is the outfit. The particle is the zipper.

Textbooks say ครับ is for guys and ค่ะ is for women. Queer Thai uses both as a dimmer. A lot of gay men keep khráp for work and Grab. In the chat, khâ walks in. Close, camp, tender. Also available: he is on the sister shelf now, and you will be discussing his hair.

Not a law. Some guys never switch. Trans women who live in khâ are not joking. Straight women use khâ because they are women. If every khâ is gay semaphore to you, you will have a long, incorrect evening. Bank, visa, someone’s mum: match the room. Do not debut the bit at immigration.

The crush version snaps this way. The room was in khâ. One guy is not the room. Khráp comes back. Masculine. Interested. Not sisterly.

What not to do

Do not collect people. Do not walk up to a performer and try your new nouns. Do not call a woman gà-thoei because a blog taught you the word. Do not use dtút.

Do copy the room you were invited into. Stick châm on a real noun. Use rêet until it feels boring, then you have learned it. If someone is dtuy, let them sit down. If someone says gâew, go home.

Start with rêet, châm on a noun, and dtuy when you mean tired. The rest is a bigger closet. You do not have to wear it all on day one.

How to Order Noodles in Thai: Noodle + Broth + Meat

English orders noodles like a novel. Hi, could I please get the egg noodles, in the spicy dark soup, with pork, thank you so much. Thai orders noodles like a sandwich. Four fillings. No speech.

Type of noodle + broth + meat + anything else.

That is the whole sport. Ao bà-mìi náam-dtòk mǒo khâ. I will take egg noodles, waterfall soup, pork, polite particle. The stall already knows you are hungry. You just have to name the bowl.

Day-one starter kit

The verb: เอา ao (I’ll take)
The sandwich: noodle + broth + meat
Soup or dry: น้ำ / แห้ง náam / hâeng

Stick ค่ะ khâ or ครับ khráp on the end. Then sit down before someone else takes the plastic stool.

How to order noodles in Thai

A Thai noodle stall is not waiting for your life story. It is waiting for a stack of nouns.

You do not need ก๋วยเตี๋ยว (gǔay dtǐao) every time, even though that is the umbrella word for this whole universe. Point at the cart and start with the noodle. Then say whether you want soup. Then say the animal. Then, if you are fancy, add special, no bean sprouts, not spicy. Done. The auntie is already reaching for the strainer.

Ao is “I’ll take.” Khǒr is “may I have.” Both work. Ao is what the regulars use when they are not performing manners for a textbook. You can still be polite. That is what khâ and khráp are for.

Gǔay dtǐao is the family name. Sên lék is a child. If you say gǔay dtǐao and stop, they will ask which noodle. Save everyone a round trip. Name the noodle.

Gao lǎo is the joke hiding in the menu. You walked up to a noodle stall and ordered a bowl with the noodles removed. That is allowed. That is popular. That is how you get the broth, the meat, the meatballs, and none of the homework.

Náam-dtòk means waterfall. The soup is not a picnic. It is dark, it is spicy, it often leans pork, and the traditional version is not shy about offal. If the bowl in the photo looks like it has opinions, that is the family. Boat noodles sit nearby, gǔay dtǐao reua, small bowl, big feelings.

You can stack it: noodle + náam-dtòk + meat. That is the bà-mìi náam-dtòk mǒo move. You can also go noodle + hâeng + meat and skip the pond entirely.

Condiments live on the table: fish sauce, chili, sugar, vinegar. That is not the order. That is homework you do after the bowl arrives. Do not try to specify your vinegar-to-chili ratio before they have handed you chopsticks. You will lose the plot, and also the stool.

Three bowls. Same grammar. Different lunch.

Egg noodles, waterfall, pork. Ao bà-mìi náam-dtòk mǒo khâ.

If your brain dumps the Thai at the last second, point at a noodle, say náam or hâeng, say mǒo, add khâ. That is a legal bowl. The stall has seen worse. The stall has seen people order in English and then look surprised when the soup is spicy. You are already winning.
